Urology/ED

What is Trimix?

When oral therapy with common prescription medications fail or are contraindicated to provide a sustainable erection for selected patients, some urologists may suggest the use for intracevernosal injections.

Commonly known as Bimix, Trimix, or Quadmix, these preparations are customized for each individual’s specific needs. Your doctor, commonly your urologist, will first need to evaluate you, determine the appropriate dose, provide consultation and injection technique and warn about side effects that may occur as a result of using the injection.

How to obtain:

Once you have been evaluated by your physician, he/she will then provide us with a prescription tailored to your specific needs, including dosing instructions and how much to use for each injection. Our pharmacy will then compound the exact formulation based on your doctor’s orders and ship the medication to you overnight or have it available for pickup at our pharmacy.

How the medication works:

The preparation is injected directly into the side of the penis and produces an erection anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes after the injection. It works by dilating the arteries of the penis and allowing blood to flow in. The erection can last anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour or longer.

Common Formulations:

Some commonly prescribed mixtures are as follows:

Bimix – a mixture of phentolamine and papaverine. This combination is generally used for patients either new to ED injections or those are sensitive to alprostadil component of Trimix. Injections are generally less painful than with the other formulations.

Trimix – a mixture of alprostadil, phentolamine and papaverine. This combination is most commonly prescribed mixture, with varying doses depending on your physician’s orders. Alprostadil is a potent component of this mixture but may cause pain to some patients upon it’s injection.

Quadmix – a mixture of alprostadil, phentolamine, papaverine and atropine. In this mixture atropine is added to increase the vasodilative effects of the other drugs to enhance it’s efficacy.

Trimix without alprostadil – a mixture of phentolamine, papaverine and atropine. This combination can be prepared if one is sensitive or can not tolerate the pain associated with alprostadil.

Please consult your urologist to see which preparation is right for you. The above information is for educational purposes only. Rancho Park Compounding Pharmacy solely compounds the preparations as prescribed by the physician for an individual patient. For more information please contact the pharmacy.

How to Store:

The solution is prepared in our sterile environment using the strictest sterility guidelines such as USP <797> and California Board of Pharmacy. Once prepared, the solution is placed in a sterile multi-dose vial and placed in the refrigerator. All Trimix and Quadmix preparations must be stored in the refrigerator at all times. When ready to use the medication, remove the vial from the refrigerator, draw the appropriate amount, then place the vial back in the refrigerator. Depending on the preparation technique used, some Bimix formulations may be stored at room temperature, but please check with the pharmacy before doing so.
